The capital city of Charlotte Amalie is now more than 340 years old, settle first by the Danish explorers in the 17th century. The historical buildings and architecture here are the focus of many tours. Fort Christian is located right on the waterfront and contains artifacts within a small museum. The legislature building is another beautiful building and very typical of the type of historic architecture on the islands. Frederick Lutheran Church and St Thomas Synagogue are the two major religious buildings, both built near the beginning of the 19th Century. 99 steps is pathway that connects the lower and upper parts of Charlotte Amalie. There is actually more than 99 steps, but 99 might be most people's limit. Seven Arches Museum showcases Danish life in the 18th Century West Indies and Haagensen House is a fully restored 19th Century home filled with furniture of the period.

 

Blackbeard's Castle and Bluebeard's Castle are two famous structures purportedly built by Pirates to act as watchtowers over the St Thomas harbour. If your kids love pirate culture, they'll be into a visit to St Thomas's castles which happen to be hotels.

 

For those who love the sea and want to see more of the island, Coral World and Paradise Point Skyride. The skyride takes visitors 900 feet above Charlotte Amalie for a great view of the Harbour and surrounding countryside filled with homes and condos. Coral World is an aquarium complex that lets visitors get up close with exotic tropical fish including opportunities to feed sharks. It has several exhibits and activities that are fun for kids.
