Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the Virgin Islands.  It is the most populated of the Virgin Islands and is the financial and business center of the Caribbean. Charlotte Amalie is located mid-island on the south shore via the St Thomas harbour and Frenchman’s Bay.

The city wraps around the St. Thomas Harbor where the cruise ships dock.  Houses cover the surrounding hillsides providing a splash of colour against the blue waters and green forests. Amazingly, more than 900 cruise ships a year pass through the port of St Thomas. The arrival of the big ships is both blessing and bane to the locals as roadways become clogged with vacationers who rent cars or take public transportation to get to their lodgings.

Charlotte Amalie is rich with history. Throughout its history, the island has been occupied by several different nations. Some of the buildings and architecture of previous centuries is still standing, particularly those of the Dutch settlement. The most popular tourist attractions for history and culture lovers are Fort Christian, 99 Steps, Emancipation Park, Blackbeard’s Castle, Bluebeard’s Castle, The Legislature Building and the Seven Arches Museum.

 

To see Charlotte Amalie and the harbor in full view, you'll want to go Blackbeard's Castle on top of Government Hill. It provides an excellent vantage point overlooking the harbour. It is thought to be the lookout tower for the legendary Caribbean pirate, Captain Blackbeard.

 

You'll find all the modern amenities you need in Charlotte Amalie and most of the products you're accustomed to enjoying, however the prices will be much higher for those basic staples. There are certain measures you can take to ensure you don't spend your vacation budget on food or on souvenirs!

 

The shops and restaurants in Charlotte Amalie are exceptional providing a rich variety of Carribean flavours. Ensure you sample a good number of them and try the local dishes for something very different.
